Tegla Loroupe

Tegla Loroupe

I'd like to introduce you to Tegla Loroupe of Kenya. Her mental resilience began being tested at a young age, growing up as 1 of 24 children in a polygamist family, she had to walk 6 miles to and from school each day. When she learned she had a talent and interest in running she found no support. Her father actually discouraged her and told her she was better off babysitting. She ran several races barefoot and ended up winning one of her first major races, the New York Marathon. If it is not enough that she was such a dominant athlete, she was also a strong activist for women's rights. She used her notoriety in the sport of running to plead for peace between warring tribes in Africa. She created the Tegla Loroupe Peace Academy, an orphanage for children in a desolate region of Africa. She is a part of an elite group of athletes that advocate for world peace called "Champions for Peace". I believe it is her strong and generous heart that help provide her mind with the clarity and confidence to endure so many challenges. She's an impressive woman and has the mental resolve we could all stand to imitate
