Eppie Lederer

Ever remember as a kid your parents warning you at Halloween not to eat unwrapped candy ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿšซ because it might have razor blades in it? Or have you heard the advice that you shouldn't throw rice at a wedding because the birds ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ might eat it causing their stomachs to explode? Well these ideas were spread in thanks to this week'sย #Wedwow, Eppie Lederer, also known as Anne Launders from the very popular "Ask Anne" ๐Ÿ“ advice column in the Chicago Sun-Times๐Ÿ“ฐ. She wrote responses to the column for over 40 years and became a media celebrity. Her twin sister Popo also wrote an advice column called "Dear Abby". The two had a roller coaster relationship because of their competing jobs. Although she at times offered some controversial advice and spoke on topics that were "taboo" for the time (1950-1980), she nonetheless influenced many homes across America (her readership was said to be over 80 million!) and became an American staple. She was also spokes woman for many charities and was appointed as a cancer advisory board member by President Carter. This classy lady was a strong voice for women for decades and some of her "advice" still lingers today.
